2016 Charity Partners

We have recently revealed the two charities we will be supporting this year – The Yorkshire Breast Cancer Haven and Special Stars Foundation.

Last year the firm raised £11,000 in total for its charity partners, as well as carrying out over £25,000 of pro bono work for charity clients.  However, this year we’re determined to raise more money than ever before with a fundraising target of £15,000.

Commenting on the chosen charities and the upcoming activity, Nigel Shaw, partner and head of corporate social responsibility at Garbutt + Elliott, said: “I am delighted that we will be supporting these two very worthwhile causes in 2016.  Last year, all of our staff really enjoyed working together and raised a staggering amount of money for York Mind and Candlelighters, so there is a lot of enthusiasm for this year’s efforts and we can’t wait to start fundraising.”

As well as running the Leeds and York 10K races, Garbutt + Elliott is planning on organising a bake sale, dress-down days and quizzes throughout the year.

Lizzie Sanders, fundraiser at the Yorkshire Breast Cancer Haven said: “We are very happy to have been chosen as one of Garbutt + Elliott’s charity partners for 2016.  The Haven doesn’t receive any government contributions, so all of our funding comes from the generous donations of individuals and companies.  It costs over £1,000 to put one visitor through our full support programme at The Haven, so the money that Nigel and his team have committed to raise will make a very big difference.”

The Haven is a Leeds-based breast cancer support centre which is part of the wider Haven charity with a number of centres across the UK.  The Haven provides a wide range of therapies which help people to deal with the physical and emotional side effects of breast cancer, completely free of charge.

Natalie Barnes, chair of the board of trustees at Special Stars Foundation, said: “We currently support 190 families in Hull and East Yorkshire, with new families joining all the time. Donations are essential to ensure that we can continue to offer our vital services and help disabled children and young people.  Garbutt + Elliott raised a really impressive amount of money last year, so we are thrilled that they have chosen Special Stars Foundation as a partner and we’re very excited to see what they have planned this year.”

Special Stars Foundation supports children and young people with disabilities and their families in Hull and East Yorkshire.  As well as offering advice and support, the charity provides subsidised trips and social activities for children and young people with disabilities. In addition, Special Stars Foundation connects parents of disabled and has an extensive collection of specialist equipment, books and sensory toys which it lends out to families in need.
