Employees from Yorkshire accountancy firm Garbutt + Elliott are set to undertake a demanding 35-mile charity bike ride next month to raise funds for the practice’s two local charity partners.

Participants have set a fundraising target of £2,500, which will be donated to York Against Cancer and Leeds Children’s Hospital Appeal, as part of an ongoing charitable partnership throughout the year by the firm. The charities were chosen to receive support as both rely heavily on support from individuals and businesses to provide crucial services to people in Yorkshire.

A peloton of 28 employees is currently signed up to don the Lycra for the gruelling charity bike ride between central Leeds and York on April 15. With family and friends also invited to participate, the firm expects around 40 people may take part on the day.

York Against Cancer is a small, independent charity that provides help and support for cancer patients and their families in York and North Yorkshire, as well as funding vital research and education programmes aimed at preventing and curing cancer in the future.

Julie Russell, general manager at York Against Cancer, said: “The fundraising team at Garbutt + Elliott have been long-term supporters of our cause and we’re very grateful for their continued dedication. Fundraising events such as these make a big difference to patients and families across the area, as well as raising awareness about our work, so we wish all participants a successful cycle.”

Leeds Children’s Hospital Appeal aims to make the wards, theatres, parent waiting rooms and day case areas of the Leeds Children’s Hospital as child and family friendly as possible.

Julie Moody, director of communications and income generation at Leeds Hospital Charitable Foundation, said: “We are continually inspired by the incredible fundraising efforts from Garbutt + Elliott and we are delighted to hear that they will be holding a charity bike ride next month.

“Their ongoing generosity means that we can continue to support the communities we serve to live fulfilling lives, which would not be possible without the dedication from our fundraisers. We are hugely grateful to Garbutt + Elliott and wish them the best of luck with their fundraiser!”

The charity bike ride, which was organised by Garbutt + Elliott’s social and charity team, follows several charitable events run by the firm over the past year, including a three-peaks challenge which raised £5,000 in July 2017. Every year, the York and Leeds-based accountancy firm selects two charities to lend its support through fundraising activities.

Nigel Shaw, partner and head of corporate social responsibility at Garbutt + Elliott, said: “These are both very worthwhile causes that do so much valuable work in Yorkshire and we’re looking forward to hitting the road to show our support and raise valuable funds. Our staff are committed to raising money for good causes in our area and I’m proud that the size of the team keeps growing.

“I’d encourage people to visit our donations page online and help us raise funds for these important charities. I know that all donations, large and small, make a massive contribution to both causes.”
