Over the past 2 years the Revenue have become increasingly forceful when dealing with investigations, and I nspectors are continually being targeted to produce higher yields.  This trend is liable to continue to gather pace over the next year.  They do not have to give a reason for an investigation and will often refuse to do so if asked. Clearly some may result from information received, or be related to what the Revenue perceive as a higher risk business but many cases are selected completely at random.  Even an enquiry into a limited aspect of a return can be a long and expensive experience with significant costs.

Two popular myths held by taxpayers are:

1. As long as your accounts/returns are in order you will not be investigated.

2. Only fraudulent or guilty individuals and businesses are investigated.
