Directors


David Dickson
David has been a director with the firm since 1990, and is our Managing Director, having previously trained and qualified with KPMG, where he became head of the owner-managed business team.

He is regarded as a skillful corporate finance advisor in the SME sector, working as part of a team of 4 directors plus support staff.

David also acts as a business advisor to a portfolio of successful owner managed businesses and has particular skills in Business Development and Family Business Succession Planning Strategies. David has a significant network of contacts in the banking and venture capital market place.

He is a great believer in putting something back into the broader business community and is currently a director to several local organisations including Business Link North Yorkshire and Customer First (UK) Ltd, and also chairman of the University of York Audit committee and an advisor on the Science City York Strategy Board.

Richard Feltham
Richard qualified as a chartered accountant with Deloitte & Touche and spent seven years in their Corporate Finance division in Leeds, the last five as a director before joining Garbutt & Elliott as Head of Corporate Finance in November 2002.

Richard has a wide-ranging experience of providing corporate finance advice and support in Yorkshire, working with companies and their owners on:

  • Finance Raising
  • Flotations
  • Mergers & Acquisitions - advisory and due diligence
  • Disposals
  • Post-acquisition Integration
  • Succession Planning and Exit Strategy
  • Particular industry sectors he has been involved in include automotive, manufacturing, construction and housebuilding, support services, retail and leisure.

Richard Green
Richard is the Director responsible for the development of the Leeds office, having been involved since its opening in January 1990. His team deals predominantly with OMB's in manufacturing and service industries with particular interest/expertise in the engineering sector. Richard's key role is business advisor to these businesses with equal regard to compliance issues.

Richard has a keen interest in football, being a Huddersfield Town season ticket holder. He also enjoys playing golf and cricket.

Craig Manson
Craig joined the firm in 1998 having worked and trained with practices in the South East and the City. He moved to York, being his wife's home city, simply for the better quality of life.

In 2001, he was appointed a director of the Business Services Department and has a focus on professional clients. Craig leads the advisory services for his clients, whilst his team provides the necessary support for the compliance services of accounts, audit and taxation.

Craig is the contact for LegalPlus Services for Solicitors provided by Praxity, AISBL covering such areas as benchmarking and practice management support.

Whilst taking a keen interest in golf and cricket, Craig is otherwise occupied by his two noisy and rapidly growing children.

Jeremy Oliver
Jeremy joined Garbutt & Elliott in 1989 qualifying as a Chartered Certified Accountant in 1993. After qualifying Jeremy began working in the Corporate Advisory department providing business advisory services to a range of clients and advising on corporate finance transactions.

More recently Jeremy became a director of Garbutt & Elliott Ltd, his role being to continue the development of the corporate advisory services and more recently to lead the firm's property services initiative where he is involved with a number of the region's active property developers and investors.

Jeremy has a wide range of experience of issues facing owner-managed businesses covering the whole business life cycle from start up to succession/exit planning. Jeremy regularly becomes involved in the following areas:

Susan Reid
Sue, together with Craig Manson heads up the Business Services Department. She acts for many sole traders and partnerships; dynamic people who are growing their firms.

Recently she has been involved with some major outsourcing projects where Garbutt & Elliott are responsible for the role of the finance function for some clients. These responsibilities include carrying out the book keeping procedures, operating all the banking, preparing management accounts, annual budget, attending and reporting at Board Meetings.

Sue is a keen cyclist and lives in Nidderdale. She is Chair of Governors at Nidderdale High School and Community College, a post which she is passionate about.

Nick Scull
Nick qualified with Ernst and Young and is the most recent addition to the board.  He brings with him 17 years experience in providing tax services to owner-managers and their companies, and to private clients.  He has spent the last 7 years as a tax partner with a top 30 firm where he was latterly National Head of Tax. 

Nick specialises in tax advisory projects, where he uses a consultative approach to helping clients define their personal and corporate tax strategies, and then puts the steps in place to help them achieve these goals.  He has a particular understanding of the property investment and development sectors.

Recent projects include:

  • Designing a method to allow tax-efficient profit extraction from companies, and getting the strategy approved by Tax Counsel
  • Sheltering substantially all the future gains on land and property from tax
  • Implementing innovative structures for partnerships to allow significant tax savings without incorporating
  • Realising greatly enhanced value on acquisition of a business property in a pension fund
  • Setting up an exempt unit trust to allow personal pension schemes to hold an interest in residential property

Nick lives in York and is a keen Cyclist.

Nigel Shaw
Nigel is the Director in charge of Trusts and Capital Taxes Planning. His team of three are involved in Trusts administration, accounts and tax. He has over 20 years experience in inheritance tax planning and trusts formation (as well as terminations).

Nigel's team act for over 200 family trusts ranging in size from £100k to £10m. He also acts as 'independent' trustee for wealthy families and individuals holding assets as diverse as Family Co shares to works of art.

Nigel was the immediate past Chairman of STEP (Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners) Yorkshire Branch and sat on the committee since its formation to end 2001.

Nigel is an avid sports fan and captains the Garbutt & Elliott cricket team. He enjoys generally keeping fit and relaxes by watching rugby (both codes) and reading sports autobiographies.

Alan Sidebottom
Alan is one of the firm's audit directors covering York and Newcastle. He joined the firm from University in 1990 as a trainee chartered accountant, qualifying in 1993.

Alan is responsible for a team of approximately 20 audit staff, including 5 managers, each with responsibility for their own client portfolios within their specialist areas.

Alan's client base is primarily larger owner-managed businesses and inward investor companies, located throughout the North of England. His clients are in a broad range of industry and service sectors, including construction, haulage, technology, rail and not-for-profit.

As the director for our inward investment clients, Alan oversees our PCAOB and Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 work.

Away from work, Alan's interests include Sheffield United, horse racing, cricket, reading and films.

Ian Smith
Ian is the company’s finance director and company secretary. He is responsible for all its backroom operations – finance, personnel, anti-money laundering and maintaining compliance with institute regulations and guidelines.

Ian qualified as a chartered accountant in 1988 and has been head of finance of companies in both IT and lighting industries. He joined G&E in May 2000.

When not at work Ian is a keen swimmer and a season ticket holder at Leeds United. He also has a soft spot for Dover Athletic – a good few divisions below that! He also enjoys reliving his youth by attending soul music functions whenever possible.

Anthony Tarpey
Tony is responsible for all aspects of the firm's business development and marketing activity and works closely with the other directors in supporting their strategic objectives.

Tony has specialised in professional service marketing for over 12 years & joined Garbutt & Elliott in 1998, having had a previous spell with a top 20 firm in a similar role. He possesses a good understanding of owner-managed businesses, having himself been a Managing Director of a textile manufacturing business for six years.

He is a graduate of York University, has two sons, and lives in West Yorkshire.

Russell Turner
Russell trained and qualified with Grant Thornton and was a senior manager in the Business Advisory department, before joining Garbutt & Elliott's Corporate Finance Team in July 1999. Russell became Director of Corporate Advisory services in July 2001.

Russell has an excellent understanding of owner-managed businesses and the issues they face, particularly from a financial, commercial and management aspect. As such, he specialises in delivering strategic and financial advice to clients focused on growing their businesses, improving profitability and managing succession and exit matters. Russell has worked closely with owner-managers for many years and his role as advisor is to deliver timely, proactive advice that improves profitability and minimises tax.

Russell is the lead advisor to owner-managed businesses for Corporate Finance deals between £1m and £6m, and works closely with banks and lawyers to ensure the clients' expectations are achieved and the deals successfully completed. He appreciates that selling, buying or restructuring a business may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and choosing the right advisor is essential.

Russell is a Director of Venturefest (York) Limited and has worked closely with technology and knowledge-based businesses, including University spin-outs for the last 6 years, advising on fund raising for start-ups right through to management buy-outs and trade sale. The technology sector is a key aspect of the regional economy and Russell believes that potential high-growth businesses should receive the professional support needed to succeed.

Adrian Widdowson
Adrian provides advice and support to audit and corporate finance colleagues, with particular emphasis on transactional work such as company acquisitions and disposals, corporate restructuring and shareholder tax planning. Adrian has experience in employee share schemes, company valuations, cross-border tax matters and the tax matters and the tax issues affecting small self-administered pension schemes.
