Mr Bean’s Visit Underlines ‘Economic Significance’

Charles Bean
Deputy Governor of the Bank of England

York is still an economic power-house of the North of England. That is the view of the city's ancient Company of Merchant Adventurers in the wake of the visit to the city by Charles Bean, Deputy Governor of the Bank of England.

Mr Bean, talked to 50 Yorkshire businessmen at a private lunch at the 15th Century Merchant Adventurers' Hall. Professor Tony Robards, Governor of the Company of Merchant Adventurers, said, "His visit underlined the economic significance of York and we had an extremely positive and constructive exchange of views.

Clearly these are difficult economic times, so it was extremely useful for leading businessmen of York to have an illuminating insight into the workings of the Bank of England. The relationship we have built up with Mr Bean will hopefully stand us in good stead in the months and even years to come."

He said, "This visit dispelled the misguided notion, sometimes expressed, that York is some economic backwater. Nothing could be further from the case and I know Mr Bean was extremely impressed by the quality of his audience and the breadth of their business activities".

The lunch, jointly sponsored by York-based accountants Garbutt & Elliott and lawyers Harrowells, was organised by Professor Robards who chaired a questions and answers session.
